Carjacking suspect dead after shootout with police
The incident started around 9 a.m. in St. Louis County.
JEFFERSON CO., MO. - A chaotic scene throughout St. Louis County and Jefferson County Monday morning after a carjacking led to a police shootout.
The incident started around 9 a.m. when a vehicle driven by 31-year-old Jarrod Kershaw, of Pacific, went off the road around southbound 270 and I-55.

Bystanders stopped to try and help Kershaw, that’s when he held one of the bystanders at gunpoint and said he was taking his car. The man brought him to his vehicle, which his family was in, and Kershaw tried to leave, but said he couldn’t drive a stick shift.
Kershaw made the man walk with him to the other bystander’s vehicle, but didn’t make him or his family get in. He took off with the vehicle and officers from three agencies including Festus, the highway patrol, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop the vehicle by using stop sticks. The stop sticks disabled the vehicle and Kershaw started firing shots, which led to a shootout with police.
A St. Louis County police car had multiple bullet holes from the shootout.

Police say Kershaw had on a bulletproof vest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident shut down I-55 at Route 61 for several hours.
In a Monday afternoon press conference, police said Kershaw’s mother called police to report her son was on his way to De Soto, Mo., to kill a family member and himself. He also made homicidal and suicidal threats. The motive behind his actions is unknown.
No one else was injured. The investigation is ongoing.
